“Folk Fusion”

Tom Reese (flute) & Laurie Haines Reese (cello)

Imagine JS Bach jamming out with Jethro Tull. Add Miles Davis, Turlough O’Carolan, perhaps a few others … all those sounds melting together creates “Folk Fusion.” Tom & Laurie, husband & wife duo, have developed a unique style that fuses elements of classical, folk & jazz.  “Folk Fusion” blends classics by Bach, Ellington & O’Carolan bridged by jazz inspired improvisation.

black and white photo of Tom and LaurieSince 1990, the husband & wife team of Tom & Laurie Reese have fused their diverse backgrounds into a unique style.  Their eclectic style combines elements of classical, jazz, celtic & folk music, and creates a new sound, dubbed “Folk Fusion.” A high level of musicianship combines with a strong creative urge, and MuZette takes flight into musical fantasy.  This combination of an award-winning composer & a classically trained cellist engages audiences of all ages.  Their repertoire includes standards in jazz, classical, celtic & folk music in addition to originals.

Improvisation is key to their performances. Tom’s background is in jazz; Laurie has a master’s degree in classical cello performance. Combining their different musical backgrounds has led to a wide circle of performance opportunities. Traditional Irish & celtic tunes proved to be the initial meeting ground between Tom’s jazz experience and Laurie’s classical training. Not wanting to abandon their individual musical roots, however, Tom & Laurie each pursued their own voices, leading them to create several more ensembles. Each ensemble is unique, performing standards as well as originals.

They are now hosting a workshop for beginning and intermediate improvising musicians.  Join us!
